DIY - Sewing your own grain pillow

Grain pillows are wonderful sources of warmth and are ideal for relieving stomach pain, tension or colds. The soothing warmth of the pillows helps to relieve pain and increase general well-being. We would be happy to show you how to easily sew a grain pillow yourself - in the shape of a sweet grain mouse.

Grain pillows are wonderful heat sources and are excellent for relieving stomach aches, tension, or colds. The soothing warmth of the pillows helps to alleviate pain and improve overall well-being. Since they do not contain chemicals and do not heat up as much as conventional hot water bottles, they are particularly recommended for children. In addition, they can be easily made at home. We would be happy to show you how - in the form of an adorable grain mouse:

Materials:

  • Fabric (lining fabric, outer fabric)
  • Yarn
  • Cereal grains (e.g. buckwheat, spelled or millet) or fruit seeds (e.g. cherry stones or grape seeds)
  • Scissors
  • Iron

Preparation:

  1. Cut the fabric for the inner cushion, the cover and the ears using our patterns

The inner cushion (made of lining fabric):

  1. Sew the inner cushion all around with a seam allowance of 1 cm, except for a small turning opening, then the inner cover can be turned inside out
  2. fill the inner cushion with the grains and stitch up the opening

 Reference (made of outer fabric)

  1. Fold in the two parts of the bottom of the mouse twice by 0.5 cm on the straight edges, iron them, then stitch the folded edge in place
  2. Iron the mouse head around 1 cm on the round side
  3. Sew the ears closed with a seam allowance of 0.5 cm (foot width), the straight edge remains open, the ears turn over
  4. Fold the ears and pin them to the head
  5. Pin the head with ears onto the large pattern piece and stitch it tightly along the ironed round side
  6. Place the two pieces of the underside on the large pattern piece with the stitched head (right side of fabric to right side of fabric). Attention: the two short parts of the bottom must overlap
  7. Now sew completely all around with a 1 cm seam allowance, then the cover can be turned through the opening
  8. Cover the inner cushion with the outer fabric

There you go! Pretty, isn't it?

Application

To warm up the finished grain pillow, you should use one of the following methods:

Oven: at 70°Heat C (top/bottom heat) for about 5 minutes

Tiled stove/heating: Place it on an appropriate spot on the tiled stove or heater and leave it until it reaches the desired level of warmth

DANGER! The grain pillow should not be put in the microwave as there is a risk of overheating.

Before use, the grain pillow should be kneaded well and tested on the back of the hand.

Care instructions

The outer fabric can be removed and best washed by hand. The filled inner cushion must not be washed. It should generally not come into contact with moisture. After use, it is best to hang it up to air briefly and shake it regularly.
